Instructor Profile

Instructor:  Dr. G.L. Chew

Sifu Chew was introduced to the internal arts in 1958. His Tai Chi training has primarily been the Wu and Yang family styles although he incorporates Chen, Hao, and Sun style principles in practise and teaching as well.  The introductory short course centres on the Yang style while the main class involves a broader perspective from these five main styles.

The Dao Yin and Qigong classes are also largely of Wu and Yang roots.  They have been enriched by his travels over the past half-century and by his meetings and conversations with many teachers in Europe, North America, and China.

The therapeutic Tai Chi program follows the successful programs incorporated at Stanford University and Harvard Medical School.  Both these programs follow the gentle Yang style.

In Aikido, Sifu Chew is also the first Canadian instructor of Master Kawahara Yukio, the late technical director of Aikido for Canada. His 40 years of aikido study with his master allows him to offer the full curriculum of Aikido as put forward by Aikido Hombu headquarters in Tokyo.

Thus, Sifu Chew has a rather unique mastery of the Asian internal arts ranging from the gentle and meditative to the more dynamic and martial.

(Before opening Tai Chi & Co., Sifu Chew was a senior professor in the Psychology and Neuroscience Department at the University of Lethbridge.  During this time, he taught the internal arts as part of his pro bono commitment to the university and the southern Alberta community at large.)
